"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."  Exodus 20:16

Now it doesn't come right out and say it but we have all grown up to believe that this basically mean do not lie.  Do not tell something that is not true.  Whether or not that is exactly what was intended (and I am inclined to believe that it does... and much much more) that is not the point of this post.  We will believe it is true.

Originally I wanted to start this post: When is it ok to lie to someone?  Jesus says never.  Then I wanted to go on about how in this world we are obligated to lie in one situation or another.  If not then we would be going around just ripping out the hearts of some pretty sensitive people.  I have probably done more of my share recently of being "honest".

It would definitely would make me feel better in this moment.  Just to rip into someone about something I see in them that is horrible.  Or just slightly bad.  It would make me not have to deal with what I have inside of me and make it about them.

See where I am going with this?

Of course when my rational mind and heart kick in it all just means that sometimes we just have to bite our tongues and just wrestle with whatever it is inside us that we don't like.  Whatever this certain truth is stirring within us and then give it to Jesus.  Or just wrestle with it and believe that whatever happens it is better than hurting others.  Even if it's true.

Jesus also reminds us to speak the truth in love. I think the balance is found with truth and tact. We don't ever have to lie- that is Satan tricking us into thinking that. I will admit though, that is often the most convenient solution. But convenience doesn't equal godliness.
